At the core of my work as an academic is my role as an educator. My approach to education is student-led participatory. My teaching grounds contemporary Innovation & entrepreneurial theory within a foundation of human-centred research and design methods engaged participant-based research. In considering my career as an educator, I have written five ‘principles of learning’ that guide and are evident in my work:

  • Educational design starts from the ‘social realities’ of an academic context.
  • Educational institutions are civic institutions that extend beyond the classroom.
  • Inclusion is not just a moral imperative but a strength that leads to Innovation.
  • Design for diversity in the structure and application of learning.
  • Embrace play, uncertainty, and failure.

I take a participatory approach to education that recognises students’ experience and knowledge as equally important to my own. I adjust teaching methods and resources to ensure all students access learning. In my teaching, I draw on my extensive professional and academic networks to bring people and institutions that offer students new spaces for learning outside the university.

I ensure my work sits within the needs and dynamics of my department by continuously meeting, discussing and working on my teaching with all of our professional services, teaching staff at the Centre. I also contribute to the broader culture of the university through my research, work as a committee member, cross-department collaborations, as a personal tutor and supervisor and my commitment to inclusion and the widening participation in University life.
